On Friday, June 7th, 2013, Congregation Shir Libeynu held a Pride Oneg Shabbat. With prayers, readings and songs both traditional and contemporary, Rabbi Goldberg, and our chazzan, Daniela Gesundheit, conducted a service that celebrated the arrival of Shabbat and of Pride Month.
The joyousness of the evening was tempered by the realization that in many countries, there can be no such celebration and that people who openly identify as LGBTQ do so at great risk. The members of our Pride Committee took turns introducing speakers from organizations that are active in assisting LGBT refugees in escaping from hostile countries and settling into a safe space. They included: Iranian Railroad for Queer & Refugees (IRQR), The Rainbow Railroad and Group of 5.
Afterwards, we enjoyed a reception with food and music and great company.
Later in the month, we marched as a shul at the annual Pride parade.
