B’nei Mitzvah Program 2020-2021

B’nei Mitzvah Program 2020-2021

What:

Now in its sixth year, the B’nei Mitzvah program explores topics of Jewish philosophy and ethics, such as tikkun olam, tzedakah and other Jewish perspectives on justice. Additional themes include the Jewish year and life cycle, Jewish ritual and Jewish history. Young people have an opportunity to dig into their own family histories and the histories of diverse Jewish communities to develop their own understanding of what it means to them to be Jewish, and part of a Jewish community.

This year, the program will be a hybrid model, combining online learning and when (and if) possible, in-person learning and excursions. Whether virtual or in person, the learning environment is guaranteed to be interactive, challenging, creative and fun!

Our B’nei Mitzvah program reflects the values of our synagogue. Shir Libeynu is a liberal, egalitarian congregation, unaffiliated with any particular stream of Judaism. Our goals are to celebrate and experience joyfully all aspects of Jewish life and spirituality within an environment of inclusiveness, innovation and intellectual challenge. Our diverse community welcomes all people, including interfaith, LGBTQ+, traditional and non-traditional individuals and families.

Students will be expected to attend a number of Shir Libeynu’s Shabbat services, which are currently being offered virtually. We will provide opportunities for the B’nei Mitzvah students to participate more actively in services once we are able to congregate in person again, and for parents and students to connect with one another and with members of the Board of Directors and Education Committee of Shir Libeynu.

Who:

The program is for young people who are 11 to 13 years of age. Having a bar/bat mitzvah is not a requirement for taking this program, although most participants go on to celebrate a simcha (bar/bat mitzvah ceremony). However, to have a simcha at Shir Libeynu, a young person must have participated in the B’nei Mitzvah program. If you would like to discuss planning a bar/bat mitzvah for your child with Shir Libeynu, please contact Karen Charnow Lior, President of the Board or Directors: slboard@shirlibeynu.ca.

To register for the B’nei Mitzvah program, at least one of the child’s parents/guardians must be a member of Shir Libeynu. Please click here for information about membership. We will not turn anyone away for lack of funds.

Teacher:

The program will be taught by Yonah Sienna. We are very pleased to welcome them to Shir Libeynu! Yonah is a Jewish educator, artist and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. Before learning ASL, Yonah studied ancient history at the University of King’s College, and spent a year in Israel with Young Judaea. Yonah has led many classes and workshops, from basic Hebrew literacy to disability in the Tanakh, and is the author of the “Yallah Ivrit” Hebrew curriculum and textbook series, published by City Shul and currently used by the Jewish Heritage School at Congregation Habonim.

When:

The program consists of 8 classes on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm on October 18, November 22, December 20, January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18 and May 23.

Cost:

The cost this year is $650 because many of the outings are not possible, at least in the foreseeable future.
