In his influential book, The Sabbath, Abraham Joshua Heschel describes Shabbat, the Sabbath, as ” … not an interlude but the climax of living.” Friday nights are traditionally a time to gather with family and friends, to feast and sing, to bring an end to a week of work and the mundane, and to usher in the sacred day of rest. Using insights from The Sabbath, and consulting the colourful musical traditions of Kabbalat Shabbat and the blessings for the Sabbath meal, we will discuss, learn, and sing our way through a Shabbat evening together. Participants will come away with an enriched understanding of the prayers and blessings for this weekly ritual.
