Jewish Lineage and Belonging

Congregation Shir Libeynu affirms Jewish identity through either parent, regardless of
gender. A person with one Jewish parent who is raised with a Jewish identity and
participates in Jewish life is fully recognized as Jewish in our community.

We make this commitment in recognition of how Jewish families are formed today. Families
come into being through many pathways, including adoption, IVF, surrogacy, and other
assisted reproductive technologies. Jewish belonging at Congregation Shir Libeynu does not
depend on who carried a pregnancy, but on love, intention, education, and lived Jewish life.

Conversion is never required for those who meet our lineage policy. At the same time, we
understand that Jewish life exists across communities with differing standards, and
conversion remains a meaningful and respected option for anyone seeking broader
recognition or a ritual affirmation of Jewish identity. We support individuals and families in
making the choices that feel right for them.
